Why your grey muzzle companion may have graduated from an adult dog leash to a senior dog lead
I noticed my new client’s dog leash in her hand as I examined her senior dog. I was sure the leash had been a connection between dog parent and dog for many long walks back in the day. But now was the leash a burden or a benefit to the grey-muzzled companion? As with many of my new clients with older dogs, I asked her about using a dog leash:
Me: “What kind of leash do you use?”
New client: “I really don’t use a leash on a regular basis. I just put this on him to come to the vet and maybe to lead him back in the house if he is feeling stubborn.”
I wasn’t surprised. It’s the response I’d heard many times from pet parents who had been by their dog’s side through the journey from puppyhood to senior status. What did surprise me was that it took 20 years of practicing veterinary medicine before I had this revelation…
As with so many other differences between adult dogs and senior dogs, what once worked for an adult dog does not necessarily serve a golden-ager well. The fundamental job that a dog leash serves changes as a dog ages too.
Why senior dogs grow out of adult dog leashes and into leather dog leads
Unlike the boisterous (and perhaps unruly days of old), many parents of senior dogs are simply guiding their grey-muzzled charges along the right paths—often paths of their dog’s own choosing. Walks may be shorter, slower, sweeter. Dog owners stay close to their golden agers to lend a helping hand. Once in a while, they may need to “lasso” an off-leash free spirit to gently guide him, so that together they can continue an easy-going adventure.
How senior dogs may benefit from leather dog leads
If you, like so many owners of senior dogs, use your leash more like a gentle guide than a corralling tool, a slip lead may be the perfect solution. Slip leads are like a loose “lasso” that easily loops over the dog’s neck and is just as easily removed. No fumbling with clips or turning or twisting your dog’s neck to fasten the leash to the collar. Easy on. Easy off. No fuss.
If the term “slip lead” conjures images of a 69-cent piece of braided nylon that vet offices keep on hand for their black sheep clients who don’t bring their dogs in on a leash, let me set the record straight. I’m not suggesting a 69-cent nylon rope for your aging champ. Their skin deserves a quality leather dog lead that’s gentle on their aging body.
Why a leather dog lead might be the ideal solution for senior dogs
As an integrative veterinarian for almost 20 years, leather is my preferred material for dog collars and dog leashes. Leather…
- is a natural material that is comfortable, soft, and easy to maintain.
- uses the oils in your dog’s own skin to soften it. It breathes.
- is organic. (Some dogs are sensitive to synthetic materials such as nylon.)
Last year, our family adopted a little waif of a hound mix that had ambled into our yard and made friends with my kids. Jake was emaciated, covered in fleas and ticks, and had a skin disease that took a month to clear up. But long after his coat regained a healthy luster, he was plagued by a red band of irritated skin on his neck. I tried ointments and several different nylon collars before the light bulb went on! I got him a leather collar and he hasn’t had a problem since.
