Otitis isn’t a fear of soul singer Otis Redding, it’s the technical term for “ear infection” or inflammation of the ear, and in this episode it’s the focus of the Buzby Dog Podcast.
Dr. Buzby shares the most common causes of infection in your dog’s ears, the symptoms to look for and how to respond when you see there’s an issue. Hello Dr. Buzby, I have a 14 year old (she just had her birthday) cockapoo named Lulu, who developed a small ear tumor in November of 2022, which we think has been contributing to recurring ear infections that cause her to have ear pain and balance issues. We are cautious in having the tumor removed though because of her age, and she has diagnosed congestive heart failure and thyroid issues (minor). She has managed her congestive heart failure very well and is now 4 years past her given life expectancy! She has been such a fighter so we just want to know any advice you might have. She is currently on oral antibiotics which we hope will help her in the next day or two though she had one a few weeks ago that she was also treated with oral antibiotics for. Thank you!

Hi Bailey,
I understand why you are concerned about these recurring ear problems in your senior girl. It does make things tricky since Lulu is not a great anesthesia candidate and has a tumor in her ear canal that needs to be removed. Honestly, I am not sure what the next step would be. It may be worth scheduling a consultation with a specialist/veterinary dermatologist just to know what the options are for Lulu. If there is no safe way to remove the tumor, you may be left with treating infections and flareups as they develop. Also, using a medicated ear flush to routinely clean the ear at home can be helpful to keep infections at bay. Hoping you can find the best way to keep your sweet girl happy and healthy. Wishing you both the best of luck.
