Pain in dogs is a multifactorial issue, which includes the physical discomfort as well as the emotional stress associated with pain. In this second part of their conversation, Dr. Buzby is joined by Dr. Ralph Harvey, veteran professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee, to discuss his wisdom and experience assessing and managing pain in dogs and the continuum of fear, anxiety, stress, and pain that we must address to be truly successful in helping painful dogs.

Dr. Harvey is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, and is a member of the Fear-Free Executive Council. He focuses his practice and teaching on pain management and anesthesia. If you’ve ever wondered how your dog is feeling and how you can better help him or her through the aches and pains of aging, this episode is for you.

I suffer from chronic pain from ruptured discs and inflammation in my lower back so I can relate to my companion who has a building disc in his lower spine and arthritis in his shoulders. This is presented now with excessive panting and shaking while on a veterinarian-prescribed gabapentin and NSADs. I am very interested if Tramadol is safe to take long term for my dog while I take it daily to keep me mobile.

      Hi Sandy,
I am sorry you and your pup are living with chronic pain. There are conflicting reports about tramadol’s effectiveness in dogs, but many vets (including myself) have seen patients do very well with it. I also encourage you to look into Amantadine and even alternative therapies such as acupuncture and laser. I will attach links to other articles with more information. Hoping you can get the answers you need to ensure your sweet boy finds relief and comfort.
