Back leg weakness can be worrying for any dog parent. Watching your once-active companion begin to struggle to stand, climb stairs, or keep up on walks is heartbreaking. And realizing your dog suddenly can’t use his or her hind legs may feel like nothing short of a nightmare.
What is hind leg weakness in dogs?
Rather than being a specific condition, hind limb weakness is a symptom of many conditions in which the dog loses some degree of strength in one or both rear limbs gradually or rapidly. Since “weak back legs” can encompass a broad range of presentations, it can be helpful to further categorize the weakness based on several factors.
Speed of onset: Acute or chronic hind limb weakness
In some cases, you might notice your dog’s back legs gradually becoming weaker. This may look like him or her having trouble standing up, jumping into the car, or keeping up on walks. Or the back legs might be shaking or sometimes seem to collapse.
In other situations, your dog’s back legs may go from fine to weak in a short period of time. Sudden hind leg weakness in dogs is a sign that you need to seek veterinary care immediately. This is especially important if your dog is unable to walk or support himself or herself on the leg(s). Often, the speed at which a dog with acute weakness receives appropriate treatment plays a role in the outcome.
Number of limbs affected: One or multiple
Depending on the underlying cause, the dog might suffer weakness in one back leg, both back legs, or even all four limbs. Keeping the number of limbs that are affected in mind can help narrow down the possible culprits.
Severity: Mild, moderate, or severe
The degree of weakness can vary significantly. With mild weakness, you may need to watch closely and know your dog well to notice anything is going on. Other times, the weakness is more obvious, but your dog is still able to move from point to point. In severe cases, though, a dog may be so weak that he or she is completely unable to stand or walk. Or he or she may only be able to stay standing a few moments or walk a short stretch.
Severe weakness is an emergency where time is of the essence. In some cases, moderate levels of weakness also indicate the need for prompt care, especially if it happened quickly. Often, mild weakness signals the need for a vet visit, but not necessarily an emergency one. However, these are general guidelines, so if in doubt, contact your vet for advice.
Pain: Present or absent
Pain and weakness tend to go hand in hand, especially with orthopedic conditions. It can sometimes be difficult to determine how much of the dog’s difficulty in getting around is related to weakness, how much of it is pain, and how much of it is a combination of both.
However, there are also some causes of weakness where the dog is not painful in the limb(s). Determining whether the dog is painful or not can help rule out some potential causes of the weakness.
What symptoms might a dog with weak back legs show?
Dogs with hind leg weakness may have subtle changes or more obvious symptoms. When evaluating your dog’s posture and gait, you might notice:
- Unsteady gait (ataxia): The dog may be wobbly and off balance, stumbling, or unsure where his or her feet are.
- Difficulty standing and walking: Due to poor leg strength, your dog may stand and walk short distances, then lie down. Or he or she may struggle to stand up and then sink back down again, or be unable to stand or walk at all.
- Stiff or hunched posture: If the dog has back pain plus weakness, he or she may stand with an arched back.
- Hesitation when trying to climb or jump: Instead of happily jumping onto the couch, your dog may walk up to the couch, pause, and look at it. Then he or she may make an attempt to get up, which may or may not be successful.
- Knuckling of the hind paws: Especially with neurological problems, you might notice knuckling in dogs. Plus, the toenails or toes (especially the middle two) might be worn or damaged if they scrape along the ground when the dog takes a step.
- Dragging the hind legs: A dog who is paralyzed or extremely weak in the hind end may attempt to drag the hind legs behind him or her.
- Collapse: Your dog might suddenly sink to the ground and be unable to get back up again.
- Shaking or tremors: Sometimes the back legs or the whole body might be shaking.
Additional signs
Dogs often have other symptoms that accompany the rear leg weakness. Depending on the cause, signs might include:
- Pain: You may notice signs your dog is in pain, such as changes in attitude or activity level, poor appetite, or shaking. These symptoms may gradually worsen over time or be sudden and severe.
- Increased sensitivity to touch (hyperesthesia): Some dogs may yelp or even try to bite if you touch certain sensitive areas of the hips, back, or legs.
- Urinary and/or fecal incontinence: Conditions that affect nerve transmission to the legs may also interfere with the signals to the bowels and bladder. The result is loss of bowel and/or bladder control.
- Weakness in the front legs: Some conditions also impact the front legs. They may become weak at the same time as the back legs or later on in the disease progression.
- Other condition-related symptoms: You might also see scrapes, bite wounds, excessive drooling in dogs, dog breathing fast, or other signs related to the condition causing the weakness.
When does a dog with weak back legs need to go to the vet?
Because there are many conditions that can cause hind leg weakness, it is challenging to give hard and fast rules about whether your dog needs an emergency vet visit or a regular vet visit. When in doubt, the best thing you can do is call your vet and explain what is going on. Then he or she can advise you of the next best steps.

In general, though, severe sudden weakness, paralysis, severe pain, open wounds or potential broken bones, difficulty breathing, cold or blue toes (indicating lack of blood flow), ongoing tremors or seizures, and exposure to a toxin necessitate an emergency vet visit.
Mild to moderate weakness and pain that has been slowly progressing, on the other hand, is typically best addressed by making an appointment with your regular veterinarian.
20 causes of weak back legs in dogs
There are a number of disorders that can lead to hind leg weakness in dogs. Often, hind end weakness points to something affecting the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, brain, spinal cord, and/or nerves that facilitate motion in the hind legs. However, it can also arise from toxin exposure or some systemic diseases.
Some conditions cause gradual weakness (particularly in older dogs). Others may suddenly cause a dog’s hind legs to become weak.
The table below categorizes which conditions cause gradual versus sudden hind leg weakness in dogs. As you will see, some conditions don’t fall neatly into just one category.

Sudden back leg weakness in dogs
Sometimes there are situations where the dog’s back legs suddenly become severely weak or stop working entirely. This is an emergency where time is of the essence. In other cases, the dog may have a fairly rapid onset of less severe lameness and weakness. While it may not qualify as a true emergency, dogs with newly-developed mild to moderate weakness still need prompt veterinary care.
Some potential causes of sudden back leg weakness in dogs include:
1. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
Onset: Sudden for Type 1 IVDD, gradual for Type 2 IVDD
IVDD in dogs (intervertebral disc disease) is a painful condition that develops when the intervertebral discs that provide cushioning between the bones of the spine start to press on the spinal cord or associated nerves.
In Type 1 IVDD, the jelly-like inside of the disc acutely ruptures into the spinal canal and compresses the spinal cord. This leads to rapid-onset weakness, pain, and sometimes paralysis. Type 1 IVDD is most common in long-backed dogs like Dachshunds. Especially if IVDD surgery for dogs is necessary, the sooner your dog gets to the vet, the better.
On the other hand, Type 2 IVDD involves the progressive degeneration of the disc. Over time, it begins to bulge upward into the spinal canal. Signs such as pain and weakness develop over months to years, typically in older, large-breed dogs.

2. Toxin exposure
Onset: Sudden
Toxic insults, such as botulism (exposure to Clostridium botulinum toxin) or organophosphate pesticides, can cause significant disruption to normal nerve signal transmission. This leads to life-threatening symptoms or even death.
Additionally, xylitol (birch sugar) toxicity in dogs can lead to low blood sugar. This, in turn, can make the dog weak and lethargic. Left untreated, xylitol toxicity can be fatal.
3. Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture
Onset: Sudden for a traumatic full rupture, gradual for partial tears or arthritis secondary to the CCL rupture
A torn CCL in dogs (the dog version of the ACL) occurs most commonly in active, larger dogs. But it can happen to any dog, regardless of the dog’s age or breed.
When the CCL tears acutely, the dog may suddenly start limping or seem weak on the leg. And as we’ve seen with other knee-related disorders, once the knee joint becomes unstable, arthritic changes such as damage to the joint cartilage, scar tissue formation, and decreased mobility set in. These changes interfere with a dog’s comfort and strength and may lead to gradual-onset weakness.
4. Trauma
Onset: Sudden
Some examples of traumatic insults leading to hind leg weakness include:
- Fractures
- Ligament tears
- Muscle strains or sprains
- Being hit by a car
- Gunshot wounds
- Bite wounds
- Falling from a height
This is far from an exhaustive list. Most any sort of trauma to the musculoskeletal or neurological systems can result in weakness. Depending on the location of the injury, one or multiple limbs may be affected.
5. Spinal stroke
Onset: Sudden
Also known as a fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE), a spinal stroke in dogs develops when a piece of intervertebral disc breaks off, enters the bloodstream, and blocks the blood supply to part of the spinal cord.
Spinal strokes cause pain when the blockage first develops, but the pain doesn’t persist. Weakness tends to be significant and may be more pronounced in one hind leg than the other. While there isn’t a way to reverse the damage from FCE, it is still important to seek veterinary care promptly, because a spinal stroke can look like other conditions, such as IVDD, where time is of the essence.
6. Aortic thrombosis (saddle thrombus)
Onset: Sudden
While much more common in cats, dogs can also develop a blood clot in the portion of the aorta supplying oxygenated blood to the hind legs. In cats, these clots are almost always associated with heart disease. But in dogs, aortic thrombosis can stem from a variety of situations, including protein-losing diseases, metabolic diseases, steroid use, and cancer. An aortic thrombosis develops suddenly, is incredibly painful, causes cool and blue toes, and is always an emergency.
7. Autoimmune conditions
Onset: Sudden
Immune-mediated disorders like immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA in dogs) cause inflammation, pain, and weakness in multiple joints. Generally, the dog starts limping or seeming weak fairly quickly, but the lameness may shift from one leg to another.
8. Infections
Onset: Sudden for most but some can be more gradual or chronic
Several types of infectious disorders may lead to hind leg weakness in dogs, including:
- Bacterial infections (discospondylitis in dogs)
- Viral infections (distemper and rabies)
- Fungal infections (cryptococcus)
- Protozoal infections (toxoplasmosis)
- Tick borne diseases in dogs (Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, etc.) and tick paralysis
- Meningitis (inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord)
9. Sciatic nerve injury
Onset: Sudden
While not very common, trauma to the hind leg (bite wounds, being hit by a car, orthopedic surgery) can cause a sciatic nerve injury. The sciatic nerve plays a large role in sending motor signals to the hind legs. Thus, damage to it or its branches can lead to hind leg weakness.
Gradual causes of hind leg weakness
There are also conditions where the dog’s back leg (or legs) slowly become weaker and weaker over a matter of months or years. While most of the conditions on this list aren’t an emergency, it is still best to consult your vet promptly so that your dog can get the help he or she needs.
Some conditions that slowly cause weak back legs include:
1. Hip dysplasia
Onset: Gradual
One of the most common hereditary causes of pain, poor mobility, and weakness in a dog’s back legs is hip dysplasia in dogs. Affected dogs often show mild symptoms as puppies or young adults that progressively become more severe with age.
Many dogs with hip dysplasia have trouble standing, jumping, and climbing stairs due to pain and weakness in the hips. As the condition worsens, it’s not uncommon for dogs to also experience muscle wasting (atrophy). This is usually the result of the dog bearing less weight on his or her painful back legs and instead supporting the brunt of their body weight on the front legs.

2. Arthritis
Onset: Gradual
Also known as osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs or degenerative joint disease (DJD), arthritis develops as a result of inflammation and degeneration of the joints. Early in the disease, the articular cartilage covering the surface of the ends of the bones in the joint begins to break down. As the inflammation worsens, scar tissue and bony changes develop in an effort to stabilize the joint.
Unfortunately, this makes the joint less mobile and, in many cases, more painful. Arthritic dogs may also become weaker as the condition progresses.
3. Luxating patella
Onset: Typically gradual due to arthritis, but dogs may show intermittent short-lived sudden hind leg weakness when the patella luxates during movement
Usually a condition that affects smaller breeds, a luxating patella in dogs causes instability in the knee joints (stifle) when the kneecap (patella) moves out of its normal anatomical position. With the kneecap out of alignment, the knee joint is less mobile and less stable.
Joint instability leads to inflammation, which in turn may lead to the arthritic changes described above. Some dogs may also experience weakness in the legs.
4. Degenerative myelopathy
Onset: Gradual
This non-painful condition, degenerative myelopathy in dogs. develops gradually as the white matter of the spinal cord and its protective outer covering deteriorate. The loss of communication between the dog’s brain and his or her legs results in progressive weakness, which in time will become fatal.
While other factors may be at play, researchers believe a mutation in the SOD1 gene puts certain dog breeds at higher risk for degenerative myelopathy.
5. Muscle atrophy
Onset: Gradual
With muscle atrophy, the dog’s muscles begin to shrink due to aging, illness, or lack of normal use. Senior dogs often lose muscle mass as a normal part of the aging process (just like people). But there are many other conditions that can contribute to muscle loss, such as cancer or metabolic diseases.
For some dogs, muscle atrophy is reversible. For others, there is no way to rebuild the lost muscle mass. This sets the dog up for hind limb (and sometimes full body) weakness.
6. Lumbosacral disease
Onset: Gradual
Dogs with lumbosacral (LS) disease develop back pain and weak hind legs when the nerve cluster in the spinal cord that transmits impulses between the brain and lower back and pelvic area becomes compressed. LS disease can cause a host of issues, including ataxia (wobbly gait), paresis (weakness) or paralysis, incontinence, and pain.
7. Diabetic neuropathy
Onset: Gradual
Diabetic neuropathy is an uncommon but serious consequence of diabetes in dogs. In this condition, prolonged elevation of blood sugar levels damages nerves and interferes with normal nerve signal transmission to and from the brain. This leads to hind leg weakness.
8. Cancer
Onset: Gradual due to progressive tumor growth but can be sudden due to fractures
Certain tumor types, including osteosarcoma in dogs (bone cancer) and spinal cord nephroblastoma in dogs, have been associated with hind limb weakness.
9. Metabolic problems
Onset: Gradual for most, sudden for hypoglycemia and electrolyte imbalances
A variety of metabolic problems can lead to weak rear legs, including:
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Cushing’s disease in dogs
- Kidney disease in dogs
- Addison’s disease in dogs
- Vitamin B1 deficiency
- Hypothyroidism in dogs
10. Heart disease
Onset: Gradual for progression of heart failure, sudden with arrythmias
Conditions affecting the heart, such as mitral valve disease in dogs, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM in dogs), severe heartworm disease in dogs (caval syndrome), and congestive heart failure in dogs, may cause weakness or collapse. This typically occurs due to abnormal heart rhythms, poor heart function, and/or inadequate oxygen delivery to the tissues.
11. Inappropriate nutrition
Onset: Gradual
Nutritionally induced hind leg weakness is uncommon, but it can be a factor in certain situations. Malnourished dogs (like strays or those in overcrowded breeding or shelter facilities) may experience hind leg weakness due to inadequate calorie intake.
On the other hand, overfeeding large breed puppies or feeding them an inappropriate diet can cause hind limb weakness for a very different reason. Excess energy in growing puppies’ diets can cause them to grow too quickly. This leads to excessive load on joints that are not mature. As a result, rapidly growing large breed puppies may be at a higher risk of developmental orthopedic diseases such as hip or elbow dysplasia or osteochondritis dissecans (OCD).
How will the vet find the cause of the hind leg weakness?
If your dog is showing signs of hind leg weakness, your veterinary team will use the history, physical exam, and diagnostics to narrow down the list of potential causes.

History
During the visit, your vet will collect as much information as possible about your dog’s history and symptoms. Possible questions include:
- How much does your dog normally exercise (hiking, swimming, walking, frisbee/ball play, etc.)? Have you noticed any changes in ability or interest in exercise?
- Has your dog recently interacted with other dogs or animals? (For example, having an overzealous play session at the dog park.)
- Can you think of any traumatic events (hit by a car, bite wounds, falls, etc.)? Have you heard your dog yelp after jumping, twisting, or landing?
- Have you found ticks on your dog, or are you seeing tick bite symptoms in dogs?
- Are there any changes in your home environment (new flooring, recent move, etc.)?
- Does your dog have any underlying diseases or conditions that your veterinary team may not be aware of?
- Could your dog have gotten into any toxic substances?
- Are you noticing anything else abnormal with your dog?
Physical exam
Following the history, your vet will perform a thorough physical examination, which may also include specific orthopedic and neurological tests.
The orthopedic exam may involve:
Observing the dog when sitting, rising, standing, and walking
The vet may assess how easily your dog can sit and whether the sit appears symmetrical. Then he or she will ask your dog to stand to observe the ease with which your dog rises and whether he or she can achieve and maintain a comfortable, symmetric stance.
Next, the vet will perform a gait analysis. This usually includes a controlled walk back and forth down a hallway or in the parking lot to look for signs of weakness or lameness.
Assessing range of motion and palpating legs
The vet will flex and extend the hips, knees, hocks, and other joints to check for stiffness and pain. Plus, he or she will palpate the legs to feel for swelling, heat, or crepitus (grinding or crunching).
Performing special orthopedic tests
Certain conditions also have a specific test the vet can use to help diagnose them. For example, the cranial drawer test checks for abnormal movement of the tibia, which may indicate a CCL injury. The Ortolani test identifies hip laxity to screen dogs for hip dysplasia.
Additionally, the vet may carry out a neurological exam. It may include:
Testing the dog’s reflexes
The vet may use a special instrument, called a Babinski hammer, to gently tap different points on a dog’s hind legs to assess his or her reflexes. Depending on the underlying condition, a dog’s reflexes may be normal, exaggerated (hypermetric), or subdued (hypometric).
Evaluating the panniculus response
To test this reflex in dogs, the vet may use a needle or hemostats to gently poke or pinch the skin along a dog’s back. He or she then watches for a spontaneous skin twitch or shiver.
The point at which the dog’s skin stops responding to that stimulus typically aligns with the level of injury along the spinal cord. So, twitching skin should be evident above the problem (toward the head) and absent below the problem (toward the tail).
Assessing conscious proprioception
Testing conscious proprioception in dogs involves gently flipping the foot over so the top of the dog’s toes touches the ground. Then the vet will observe how quickly (or if) the dog repositions the foot into its proper position.
Additional diagnostic tests
Depending on the results of your dog’s physical examination, your vet may also recommend additional diagnostic tests.
Running laboratory tests
A urinalysis and blood tests for dogs, including a CBC and serum chemistry, gives your vet a baseline understanding of your dog’s overall health. Plus, a tick titer may help identify tick-borne diseases in dogs. And there are additional blood tests to detect metabolic imbalances such as Cushing’s disease or hypothyroidism.
Performing imaging (X-rays, CT, or MRI)
In most cases, your vet will also recommend imaging to have a better look at your dog’s bones and joints.
X-rays of the spine, hips, knees, and ankles help identify bony changes. Some potential findings include spondylosis in dogs (age-related degeneration of the vertebral bodies, with occasional bone bridging between vertebrae), spondylitis (inflammation or infection of the vertebrae), arthritis, and bone cancer (osteosarcoma).
MRI or CT may be more helpful in identifying soft tissue abnormalities of the spine, disc problems, or soft tissue tumors (nephroblastoma). However, these specialized tests typically require referral to a board-certified veterinary specialist (orthopedic surgeon or neurologist).
Completing other tests depending on the symptoms
While the tests discussed above are the most common, it isn’t an exhaustive list. Depending on your dog’s symptoms and the vet’s suspicions, there might be other useful diagnostic tests. For example, if your vet thinks your dog may have degenerative myelopathy, genetic testing is available to identify dogs at high risk for the disease.
What is the treatment for back leg weakness in dogs?
The exact treatment depends heavily on the cause of the hind limb weakness. But generally speaking, the goals of treatment are to relieve or manage pain and resolve the weakness to allow return to normal movement (when possible).
Pain medications
Traditional medications to reduce pain include NSAIDs (like carprofen for dogs or grapiprant), gabapentin for dogs, or amantadine for dogs. Plus, as we will discuss soon, there are also many ways to relieve pain in dogs naturally.

Additional medications
Some dogs may also need antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, muscle relaxers, or other supportive medications. In the case of an autoimmune condition, the vet may also use immunosuppressants such as prednisone for dogs.
Surgery
With IVDD, certain tumors, or lumbosacral stenosis, surgical intervention may be necessary to relieve pressure on the spinal cord. And for dogs with orthopedic issues causing their back leg weakness, procedures like TPLO surgery for dogs or patellar luxation repair can greatly improve mobility and strength. (The dog is still going to be more prone to arthritis in that joint, though.)
Alternative therapies
Alternative therapies have gained popularity in recent years among veterinarians and dog parents alike.
- Gentle physical therapy and stretching techniques with a certified practitioner can relieve pain and improve strength and mobility in some dogs. (Note: For safety reasons, you should not attempt physical therapy, massage, or stretching techniques without professional guidance.)
- Underwater treadmills for dogs or swimming pools are low-impact options for dogs with joint pain and weakness.
- Holistic therapies, like acupuncture for dogs, PEMF for dogs, dog chiropractic care, etc. have shown great promise in alleviating pain and restoring mobility.
- Newer treatment modalities, including stem cell therapy, cryo- or thermotherapy, laser therapy for dogs, TENS units, therapeutic ultrasound, and hyperbaric oxygen chamber sessions, are also gaining traction as non-traditional treatments for dogs with spinal cord injuries, wound healing complications, or nerve damage.
How can you help a dog with weak back legs at home?
Depending on the symptoms your dog is experiencing, there are many at-home management options you can discuss with your vet. These approaches are generally a complement to, not substitute for, veterinary care.
Focus on weight management
First and foremost, helping your dog achieve and maintain a healthy weight is critical in supporting your dog’s long-term quality of life. Being overweight or obese puts more strain on already weak muscles and joints. Over time, this can cause your dog’s condition to worsen.
Regularly exercise your dog
For dogs with mild to moderate weakness (and with the blessing of your vet), regular exercise is still a great way to keep your dog’s joints and muscles active. Short, supervised walks allow your dog some outside time and help maintain the bond you share.

A word of caution about braces: resist the temptation to purchase a brace online. Your vet will be able to guide you on proper sizing and help you apply a brace safely if such an aid is warranted.
Make adaptations to the home
If your dog spends the majority of his or her day indoors, you can also support safe, comfortable mobility by placing non-skid floor runners or yoga mats on any areas of hard surface flooring that your dog travels regularly.
For multi-level homes, baby gates are a great way to protect your dog from losing his or her balance and falling down the stairs. And if your dog likes to be where you are, using ramps and steps gives your dog an easier way to navigate couches and beds safely. They are also wonderful for helping dogs get in and out of the car safely.
Use diapers or absorbent pads for incontinent dogs
For dogs suffering from hind leg weakness and urinary or fecal incontinence, washable or disposable diapers or pads will minimize messes on your carpet, furniture, and your dog’s bedding.
If you do use diapers or if your dog is unable to move off a mat or pad, be sure to check and change them regularly. Keeping your dog clean and dry is important to avoid urine scald in dogs and fecal matting, which can create skin irritation or lead to infection.

What is the outlook for dogs with weak back legs?
For dogs with back leg weakness, the prognosis for recovery and for a good long-term quality of life varies greatly depending on the underlying cause. Weakness resulting from infection, nutritional deficiencies, and certain types of trauma or injuries can often be resolved with timely treatment. And while arthritis can’t be reversed, there are many ways to keep your dog comfortable and mobile long into the future.
However, other issues arising from cancer, unregulated metabolic diseases, or inherited disorders like degenerative myelopathy have a more guarded prognosis. In these cases, the focus should be on symptom management and, when necessary, providing palliative care to keep the affected dog as comfortable as possible.
